Docomomo US/North Texas, in partnership with Partners for Sacred Places and Historic Mesquite, Inc., is pleased to host a tour of St. Stephen United Methodist Church, a noted example of Pratt, Box and Henderson’s portfolio.
Opened in December 1962, the first 12,000 square feet of St. Stephen was part of a visionary master plan that posed new answers to the age-old question – what should a church look like? Though only the initial portion of the St. Stephen plan was completed, the architecture has become “a symbol for openness and the willingness to initiate creative solutions to present day challenges.” – St. Stephen UMC.
Philip Henderson, FAIA will lead attendees on a guided tour of St. Stephen through its intended path of approach and experience. Further attention will be given to the building’s façade technology. Archilithics; a forward-thinking cladding technique created by Pratt, Box, and Henderson in partnership with Texas A&M University. Docomomo US/North Texas Board Member Michael Friebele will join Philip I further discussion on the designed features within St. Stephen and reflection upon architecture and liturgy.
