GREICO MODERN HOMES

listen to Tom on the Modernist Radio

“People say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” John Lennon’s instantly recognizable and quietly stirring lyric appears on the website of Greico Designers Builders, and it couldn’t be more appropriate.

Tom Greico, who passed away on January 12, 2019, spent over three decades helping people realize their dreams through the homes that he built. He began designing in high school, and fully stepped into the role that would define his life after graduating from the school of Architecture at the University of Texas in Arlington in 1983 and going on to found his business as a home builder.

A longtime member of the Dallas Home Builders Association he was elected as president of the North Dallas Builders Division, and served on their board of directors for five years.  His approach to architecture was simple, but a vital cornerstone that expresses itself in each of his homes: “design and build unique homes with timeless design that are built to last.” Beyond creating a look that defied trends and eras Greico also championed design that would require minimal maintenance with an eye towards energy conservation. It’s no wonder he found himself on D Magazine Home’s “Best Of” award list from 2013 to 2018.

He leaves behind a legacy of calm, assured, and stunning homes that elevate the lives of the people that they shelter. On behalf of our moderndallas community, we extend our condolences to Tom’s family.

“People say I’m a dreamer,
but I’m not the only one.”

Tom co-designed our home with us and then built it. He was an architect with high design skills and low ego……….a rare combination. He was also one of the nicest guys on the planet with a calm demeanor that belied the organized chaos that is home building. He had a trademark style, and as we drove around Dallas we would often spot one of his homes and declare, “That’s a Grieco home!” We were pleased to call him a friend. He will be missed.

I sold several houses for Tom and played a few rounds of golf with him over the years. I lived accross the street from one of his first spec homes in Carrollton. It was built in 1984. I think he did some great design and building, very similar to Frank Loyd Wright !

Very moving tribute, Modern Dallas. Everyone involved with the White Rock Home Tour loved Tom. For many years, Tom was a gracious supporter of our charity event, and his generosity deeply impacted the students and teachers at DISD’s Hexter Elementary. His sense of humor and kind spirit also made him one of those people everyone flocked toward, and wanted to be around. We will be forever grateful to everything that Tom did for our community.

Jeff, very well stated. Tom was my introduction to the homebuilding world 34 years ago. I works for Tom right out of highschool. He was a mentor and friend, Its not going to be the same without him. Luckily we have his homes all over Dallas to remind us daily what a talented designer/ builder he was.

    Cheers to Tom!!

Our dreamback in 2010 was to have Tom build our next (last) home. He patiently looked at every lot and tear down we considered. Over probably a three year period we searched but the right fit never materialized. But Tom was always willing to consult and advise us as we pursued the dream. Tom was always a friend first. If a deal worked out great, but only the right deal. Though ultimately we found our modern home already built in Oak Point, we enjoy driving though town and seeing Tom’s very distinctive and recognizable homes.. And we cherish the design Tom rendered for us for a property we considered in Farmers Branch. We believe Tom’s modern aesthetic will prove timeless and one day his homes will be seen as transcendent in Dallas architecture just as Donald Mayes and other native Dallas architects impacted North Texas in the 20th century. We will miss Tom for his vision and impact on Dallas architecture and moreso for the good, genuine freind he was.

Tom was a visionary who never stopped evolving. He built our home and my wife Mary, Elaine and Tom became inseparable friends spending countless hours in our Greico home together. He often studied our house over a glass of wine and recommended various things he could have done differently as we assured him we loved our home, it fit how we live and we wouldn’t change a thing. A truly talented, unique, happy and loving man. He will be sorely missed but we will forever be surrounded by his memory. For Tom …Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. Dr. Suess.

In the words of Tom himself “it will be alright”.

Tom built our house in Lakewood in 2010. We had spoken with other architects but liked Tom instantly.
You just wanted to embrace him. Our house is not a typical. Greico design. My husband added imput into the house and now I realize how special it was that he allowed us to add to his unique view of our home. He will and is truly missed by those he touched. Rest In Peace Tom.

I never talked business with Tom. We discussed the weighter issues of life. Mainly what do I need to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. We talked about whether the sacrifice Of Jesus Christ was necessary for eternal life or if we could be “a good enough person” and just overlook God’s ultimate sacrifice for mankind.
    We knew different Tom’s.

    Tom,

Your talent and your ability to create the most beautiful, modern, warm and functional homes is on display for us all to enjoy for years to come. Where everyone can see the love and passion you left behind in your work, I was privileged enough to get to know you a little bit more than that. You were a gentle soul, honest, kind and so fair!… almost an anomaly in the business of home building. You designed the most beautiful home for us–our dream home. You were a dreamer indeed… your dreams made ours come true. We saw so many things the same way. Where there was disagreement, your calm and soft voice, your warm eyes and that gentle smile would bridge the gap. You actually would argued with me to reduce cost… so unheard of in the industry. You will be so dearly missed… brother… as you would call me, and I felt like it every time you did.
