TODD CAMPLIN WEEKLY: THE DALLAS ART FAIR HAS ARRIVED!

[featured image  The Hole New York | Eric Shaw ]

The Dallas Art Fair has arrived. Today through Sunday, several local galleries and art galleries from the far reaches of the United States will be showing works by their artists. A few international spaces also grace us with their presence. Art fairs are a great spectacle for the whole family. Although space is limited at the F.I.G., so bring a small stroller if you need one. The venue for all these galleries is a maze and the normal fair grid format only emerges in the upstairs rooms. You should visit all the booths, but I have a few suggestions regarding where you might want to stay a little longer and give the art a little extra time.

CANADA New York | Katherine Bernhardt

Canada New York is back this year. They represent Katherine Bradford, who closed her Focus show at the Fort Worth Modern this January. I love the work by Xylor Jane, another artist they represent. His colors are bright and cheerful for someone that is interested in depicting numbers. I was first introduced to Canada by James Kalm’s youtube channel and I like their program. Another New York gallery I am looking forward to seeing is The Hole gallery. They are featuring just Alex Gardner, Eric Shaw, and Jonathan Chapline from all the artists they represent. This makes it more about a curated space instead of just a trade show mess.

The galerie frank elbaz is based out of Paris, the gallery also has a Dallas location near the Dallas Contemporary. If you want to get to know some gems from former Eastern Bloc countries, they represent Julije Knifer and artist Mangelos. I hope you get to see the winding blocky lines of Knifers drawings. Magelos’ anti-art must have been dangerous in the Soviet area. They show Americans too. Wallace Berman is influential to generations of assemblage artists.

Taubert Contemporary looks interesting with a line up including Markus Weggenmann, Sylvan Lionni, and Jan van der Ploeg to name a few. How can you go wrong? Minimal and colorful, all three of these artists have a winning formula for some great work.
