Designed by architect C.D. Hill and constructed in 1912, First Presbyterian Church anchors an area of downtown experiencing a rejuvenation. The 2018 Preservation Achievement Award winning sanctuary project retained many of its most significant character defining features including decorative plaster and dramatic glass dome.

Samples of the original 1912 English Wilton carpeting were also found in the balcony and collected for documentation. The narthex and sanctuary gallery areas were largely restored, while the chancel and organ were compatibly rehabilitated to create a unified design aesthetic.

Major project components included reversing modifications to the balcony rail, wainscot and other millwork, reconstruction of interior art glass windows between the narthex and sanctuary, and the introduction of compatible furnishings. Of particular significance was the restoration of the sanctuary’s art glass dome along with the original pressed copper ribs, and the beautiful central grill.
