Tucked away between the Houston & Texas Central Railway (now Union Pacific)’s Miller yard and the Trinity River, the historic community of Joppa—pronounced “Joppy” or “Joppee”—is one of a handful of Freedmen’s Towns remaining in Dallas, and is perhaps the most intact.
Founded in 1872 by emancipated freedmen from the Miller plantation in Oak Cliff, the community is still home to many of its original families, as well as long-standing community institutions.
Join Preservation Dallas and Remembering Black Dallas for a historical walking tour of this neighborhood, led by Kim High of Joppy Momma’s Farm, and Shalondria Galimore of the South Central Civic League and the Melissa Pierce Project.
We will meet at 1:30pm at Joppy Momma’s Farm on Carbondale Street, and view three endangered shotgun houses on an adjacent lot that are among the oldest houses remaining in the neighborhood.
From there, we will walk to the nearby site of the Melissa Pierce School, a long-closed school that is being transformed into a multipurpose community center.
Along the tour we will hold porch visits with community elders and learn about Joppa’s history, as well as the history of families and homes in the neighborhood.
The tour will be held outdoors, and will run rain or shine.
Please wear comfortable shoes, and dress for the weather.
This program is free for members of Preservation Dallas, Remembering Black Dallas, and the Joppa community.
Tickets for the general public are $10 per person.
