The Forum will present an enlightening and informative Panel Discussion about the vital connections between architecture and film. The Panel will educate attendees about how architectural design creates venues that combine aesthetics and technology to successfully present memorable film experiences. The Panel will also examine the integration of innovative architectural design to create iconic film scenes. Panelists Jon Mindrup and Amy Murphy, joined by moderator John Orfield, will discuss these topics and take questions from the virtual audience. John ORFIELD, Moderator
Principal, BOKA Powell
John Orfield is a partner and owner in BOKA Powell. A LEED-architect, John is an expert in urban planning and sustainability. His nearly 40 years of design experience includes workplace, academic, luxury hotel and residential projects across the United States and Mexico. Growing up in an artistically-inclined family, John developed an interest in exploring the kinship between architecture, film, and dance — art forms he sees as related in their portrayal of human experience moving through space and time. He has sought out collaborative environments or created them on the spot in design firms and universities from New York to Indianapolis to Mexico City. John earned a Master of Science in Architecture and Building Design from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture from Rice University. A lifelong educator, John was a member of the faculty of the University of Houston College of Architecture from 1984 to 1986, where he earned the Excellence in Teaching award. He also held an appointment as a visiting professor at the Universidad de las Americas in Puebla, Mexico.
Jon MINDRUP, Panelist
Principal – Architecture, BECK
With over two decades of retail and entertainment design experience, Jon brings a wealth of industry expertise to Beck’s Work/Play Group, which he oversees as Operations Leader. With a specialty in design-build delivery, Jon has led a number of large-scale projects such as Firewheel Town Center and The Domain in Austin, as well as niche boutique retail such as the Luxury Building at Galleria Houston. Jon has also managed a variety of Entertainment designs such as the Royal Gorge Visitor’s Center, several new active prototype designs for Top Golf, projects for The Spot and Pinstack, and a portfolio of cutting edge theater work for clients like Cinemark, EVO, Showbiz, Movie Tavern, Coyote Drive in and others. In addition, Jon manages the financial operations for the architecture practice of Beck in Dallas, and currently serves as the chair of the AIA/TEXO Steering Committee.
Amy MURPHY, Panelist
Associate Professor, USC School of Architecture
Amy Murphy is an Associate Professor at USC’s School of Architecture. She holds both a B.Arch. and a B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design, as well as a M.F.A. and Ph.D. in media studies from USC School of Cinematic Arts. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Amy has acted as the School of Architecture’s Vice Dean, and the school’s Diversity Liaison. She ran her own design practice, Amy Murphy Projects, for over a decade, completing numerous projects through the LA area including the renovation of Rudolph Schindler’s Yates Studio in Silverlake. Additionally, she has acted as Director of Filmforum, Los Angeles’s oldest nonprofit dedicated to experimental media. In 2015, Amy designed an exhibit, “Haunted Screens: German Expressionist Cinema in the 1920s,” in partnership with Michael Maltzan Architecture, for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
