Johannes Boekhoudt
“Elegidos”

May 11 – June 6

Markowicz Fine Art will feature artist Johannes Boekhoudt’s newest collection of paintings in an exhibition beginning Thursday, May 11.

Located at 1700 Oak Lawn Ave., the acclaimed art gallery’s opening reception for Boekhoudt’s “Elegidos” — or “Chosen” — will take place from 5-8 p.m. on May 11. The collection will remain on display until Tuesday, June 6.

“We are honored to feature Johannes’ bold and modern conceptualism and original art that he is internationally recognized for,” said Bernard Markowicz, owner of the gallery. “His artwork is a visionary of our era, commanding your attention and action. Johannes’ intention is loud and
clear, and we believe Dallas will enjoy seeing that message conveyed for themselves.”

In 1973, Boekhoudt immigrated with his parents from Curaçao to Costa Rica and worked as a commercial and air ambulance pilot until he moved to Texas. A self-taught artist, he pulls inspiration from Europe, Africa, and Latin America into his work with a style reminiscent of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Willem de Kooning, and Pablo Picasso. Boekhoudt is renowned for his unique crosses and works in various formats, including large oil on linen and canvas, and reclaimed materials such as wood and old clocks to construct elemental sculptures.

“‘Elegidos’ is a concept that reflects the time and space in which it was created with the hope of bettering society,” said Boekhoudt. “The global crises and atrocities are endless, and it’s a mission of mine to communicate and document experiences and the world we live in. I’m
pleased to be able to display my artwork in Dallas and empower newer generations to make a change.”

As a journalistic artist, the core themes of Boekhoudt’s works have revolved around the effects of political instability on human rights, social justice, and children’s and women’s rights since the beginning of his career. Based in Rockwall, Boekhoudt continuously donates his works to
charity auctions and other social nonprofit entities to fulfill his humanitarian vision. His work is included in several public and private collections, both nationally and internationally.
