Artspace111 is proud to present the latest exhibition Chasing Shadows by Carroll Swenson-Roberts. Swenson-Roberts shares her ideas of the preciousness of nature through color and play. Her work is vibrant and full of life to depict the harmony between flora and fauna. Her playfulness translates into depicting core memories like a fish nibbling your toe or the humbling awe of whale watching. These fleeting moments are echoed by her fascination with shadow and the movement of light in its relation to objects. Her paintings induce a feeling of connection to the experience of watching a flock of birds mid-flight and compositions of animals interacting with each other in a river bed. These ecological portraits present the significance of the inextricable connection of humanity and nature; figures are rendered in a small proportion in comparison to the totality of our landscapes. In her own way, Swenson-Roberts reminds us we are a small part of a much bigger picture.

““Known for her colorful palate consisting of animals and naturescapes, Swenson-Roberts tells visual stories through stillness and fleeting moments of the sublime.” – Margery Gossett, Artspace111 Director

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Carroll Swenson-Roberts grew up in Dallas, Texas and received a BFA from the University of Texas in Austin. Carroll Swenson-Roberts tells stories with color, pattern, space and shape. These elements narrate the particular time and tale of the figures in each piece of work. Swenson-Roberts’ narrative art is shaped by important events in her life. Growing Up in a large Irish Catholic Family, Marriage, Motherhood, Travels, Home, Friends, Pets, Meals, Music, Gardening, and Walks are the subject of her work. These themes focus on the surprise and joy of an ordinary life.

Artspace111 is proud to present the latest exhibition The Soft Parts by Stella Alesi. The artwork all started from a single, quick sketch Alesi drew while traveling. The sketch was a loose variation of a “U” shape that they had worked with in the past. This time the arms of the “U” curved towards each other a bit, and a small bump was drawn at its base. Alesi became fascinated how these tiny adjustments brought a sensuality to the shape it did not contain before. Alesi was delighted by the discovery of such corporeal suggestions as lips and other body parts. The body of work produced is the result of an exhaustive exploration of that shape; multiplying it, turning it on its head, changing colors and painterly approaches and then, exploring as well, the shape that was created in the negative space.
