The Statler – David Preziosi – Executive Director of Preservation Dallas – discusses one of the best success stories of Preservation in Dallas – The Statler Hotel redeveloped by Centurion American Acquisition, and Merriman Anderson Architects. Completed in 1956 at a cost of $16 million, the Statler Hotel was the first major hotel built in Dallas in nearly three decades and the largest convention facility built in the South. The architect, William Tabler of New York, designed a Y-shaped building that employed a flat-slab structural system, the first full application of its kind. Tabler also designed a thin curtain wall and faced the building with glass and porcelain painted panels. After 16 years of vacancy and being listed on local, state, and national endangered lists, The Statler is one of Dallas’ biggest preservation success stories. It was recently recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation..
