Release & Restraint
Suza Kanon

May 11 through June 15

“Release & Restraint,” is a solo exhibit by artist, Suza Kanon, featuring ceramic face jugs, polaroids, uv-reactive paintings & jello sculptures. Exhibit will be on display May 11 through June 15.

Kanon’s solo exhibit at Mighty Fine Arts (MFA Gallery) explores iconography of “Release and Restraint” through luminescent color, stencils, polaroids, and sculptural forms. Whimsical icons like birds, kisses, and toothy grins are juxtaposed against icons of restraint such as jello, shibari, containers tied tightly closed, and kinetic, reflective bird cages. Suza is known for creating conceptual art, immersive experiences, and is prolific in traditional visual art mediums such as painting and photography. Her recent ceramics practice has produced a fun series of face jug outsiders and femme binding jars in bisque-fired stoneware. The artwork shares a distinctive, neon color palette and themes of contrast. “It is the choices we make, what we surround ourselves with, and consent to that creates vistas for our human experience granting us release and other times giving us a measure of restraint for our best interest as we progress through life’s creative journey.”

Opening Reception on Saturday, May 11 from 6-9pm. Wordspace Artspeak will present a avant-garde live jazz ensemble at the Opening featuring members of Swirve (Chris Curiel on trumpet w/ fx & Gerard Bendiks on drums) with David Crandall on upright bass and lyrics by Suza Kanon, performing alongside a video & light installation by Matthew Brenner.
