With the opening of Mod + Mini Baby Design Shoppe one year ago in Dallas, parents with contemporary tastes in home design and furnishings could incorporate that sense of style into the interior design of their children’s rooms along with the rest of their homes. A retail store devoted to children’s furniture, clothing, and accessories which reflect a distinct modernist sensibility, Mod + Mini has fast become a destination shop in Dallas and online for parents in search of contemporary items.

Modernist Design in the Nursery
“Our motto is: Parents shouldn’t have to check their style at the
nursery door,’” says Shelby Hennessee, co-owner of Mod + Mini
with his wife, Lauren. He explains that the idea for the story
developed when the Hennessees realized there was a lack of
contemporary design stores which carried children’s items.
Hennessee continued, “Lauren and I both like modern design
ourselves, and the modern loft-living trend in Dallas with young
couples starting to have children dictated the need for our
store. We wanted to bring modernist children’s items to Dallas
families with modernist tastes.”
And customers from Dallas, Austin, and Houston have embraced
the store with open arms. “The reception to our store has been
great,” says Hennessee. “Our customers love our selection of
items. Some people even buy things like our wall mobiles and
gliders for themselves because the items have such a broad
modernist appeal.
Diverse Backgrounds Combined to Make Mod + Mini a Success
Lauren and Shelby each brought a unique background to their
new careers as owners of Mod + Mini. Shelby, who had a bit of
retail experience from working in a picture framing shop during his
college years, worked in commercial photography on the
production side for Dallas ad agencies. Lauren had earned a
degree in journalism and was working as a paralegal while running
a small legal office in town.

But when the idea for Mod + Mini struck them, the Hennessees left
time and effort to the store’s success.
The hardest step in the store’s start-up was finding suppliers which
offered items the Hennessees felt would satisfy their customer’s
modern tastes. “We’ve been fortunate to find designers who
offer true contemporary design in their work,” says Hennessee.
He points to Jonathan Adler’s furniture designs which can be
easily adapted for use in children’s rooms. He also notes three local
design companies: Cotton Monkey, which offers organic crib
bedding and hooded towels; Baby Bean, featuring vintage day
wear; and F is for Frank, a company known for its metalworks
including unique door and drawer pulls that are perfect in kid’s
bedrooms.
Some of the store’s most popular items include gliders, high chairs,
wall mobiles, onesies and hooded bath towels, and screen-printed
tee shirts.
